550 Laser Shots Campaign

GenF Reaches a Major Milestone with 550 Laser Shots Campaign at ELI Beamlines, Prague

Prague, August 25, 2025

GenF, a leading player in the field of Laser Inertial Fusion Energy, today announced the successful completion of a significant experimental campaign using the L4n ns-kJ laser at the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) Beamlines in Prague. During this 10 days-campaign, the GenF team carried out 550 laser shots partly aiming at studying the mitigation of laser-plasma instabilities, a critical aspect in mastering nuclear fusion through inertial confinement.

This experiment is one of the most extensive ever conducted in Europe in this field for civilian application. It enabled GenF to gather a very reliable and high-quality dataset, crucial to refining its models, validating simulations, and accelerating the development of its future laser-driven fusion reactor.

“These results mark a decisive step forward in our technological roadmap by demonstrating the serious and the relevance of our research program.”

Fusion: Unlocking Humanity’s Energy Future

GenF’s mission is to make fusion energy clean, safe, and abundant at scale. Unlike current nuclear fission technologies, fusion produces very little long-lived radioactive waste and carries no risk of runaway chain reactions.

  • Nearly inexhaustible fuel: relying on hydrogen isotopes, which are widely available.
  • Low-carbon and safe: offering a decisive contribution in the fight against climate change.
  • Unparalleled energy density: far exceeding any fossil fuel or renewable source.

By making fusion viable for industrial deployment, humanity would gain access to a stable, universal, and sustainable energy source to power its future.

The Role of Laser-Driven Inertial Confinement

GenF is a leader the laser inertial confinement fusion approach, which focuses powerful laser pulses on a small fuel target to compress it and trigger fusion conditions. This pathway, strengthened by recent international breakthroughs, has now revealed its unique potential for industrial scalability.

The Prague campaign marks a strategic milestone: by grounding its development in robust experimental results, GenF now advances on the path toward a pre-industrial demonstrator.

European Cooperation: A Strategic Driver

GenF emphasizes that this achievement would not have been possible without the support of Europe’s leading research infrastructures. Using ELI Prague demonstrates how transnational scientific cooperation is a decisive asset in tackling the complexities of nuclear fusion. By combining knowledge, experimental resources, and expertise, European countries are creating a unique ecosystem that accelerates breakthroughs and strengthens the continent’s energy sovereignty. The Prague campaign is a strong illustration that fusion success will necessarily be collective.
