Building the world first nuclear fusion reactor
Next step in nuclear fusion is to bring it to industrial scale, which requires cutting-edge expertise.

Now that Inertial Confinement Fusion feasibility has been evidenced by the NIF, the achievement of creating the first fusion reactor is at hand, provided that the right engineering expertise are brought together.
ICF requires the most powerful lasers in the world, capable of delivering large amount of energy to a small target of only a few millimeters.
Highest level of expertise in the study of atomic nuclei and their constituents and interactions, using the most advanced theoretical models, numerical simulation codes and experiments to model and optimize implosion of the targets
Management and manufacturing of Deuterium- Tritium targets requires unique knowledge to achieve industrial capacity
Cutting-edge skills in the management of large complex industrial projects, from conceptual design to feasibility studies, financing, project management and delivery
GenF building the world first nuclear fusion reactor
GenF has launched the development of one of the first fusion reactor, based on ICF technology, and leveraging the expertise of its partners : Thales, CEA, CNRS LULI and CELIA.
The commercial reactor will enter service in the 2050’s, design to deliver 1GW of power.

Genf ICF reactor diagram
(1) The reactor produces cryogenic deuterium-tritium
targets and (2) injects them 10 times per second into the fusion chamber. (3) These targets are irradiated by laser to trigger the fusion reaction.
(5a) The neutrons generated by the fusion are converted into thermal
and then electrical energy. (5b) At the same time, these same neutrons
convert lithium into tritium to fuel the target production.
